Health visitor!!

Well after almost a year of trying to convince the HV that there was something 'different' about Haydie we are finally getting somewhere!! I have expressed my concerns about Haydie's odd hand movements and lack of interest for a long time but, as expected at that age, we were told he was too young and we had to wait. She said to me if I was concerned then she would give him an 18 month assessment as well as a 2 year assessment. I was sure by 18 months she would see something!! Anyway I took him last Thursday to the clinic and expressed my concerns again in great detail and her rely was ' he is still awfully young, he could be copying his big brother... blah blah blah'!! She wanted me to take him away and come back when he was 2!! I was a little miffed to say the least!!! I looked at her and said ' no!! You told me to come at 18 months so I am here and I want you to look at him!' So the other HV who was helping her took him off me and went to the other side of the room to play with toys and try to communicate while this HV asked me some questions about him. We were a few minutes into her trying to fob me off yet again when the 2nd HV said 'Ann, he is not interested in playing with any of these new toys, he wont look at me and I believe he cannot understand a word I am saying to him.' Ann reluctantly agreed to refer him for joint assessment!! I reminded her that the waiting list for assessments was about a year long or more so Haydie would be 2 and a half by the time he was seen!!! She thought about it then agreed that early referral was the best way to go!! About time too!!!!

The 2nd HV came to visit us monday to fill in the forms. She sat and chatted to us about him to help her with the form and made some observations. She was pleased I pushed for referral as she could see straight away he is going to need help in the future. I think Ann has a fear of paperwork!!!

So just a waiting game now!!!!
